ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m honored to be the inaugural artist to show at the new On The Waterfront restaurant. When I first came into the space I was immediately impressed with the craftsmanship and style— simple yet refined and built around the appreciation of its elemental materials. Qualities that also extend to their fantastic food and wines. I was inspired to bring a collection of photography that exemplified the same qualities. First, and foremost, I want to show off the craft of photography. In particular, large photographs that highlight the sensual nature of the process and material. Second, I want to show a subject that can connect me and my experiences with the viewers in Lake County. Horses weren’t a subject I sought out to photograph, but they are magnificent creatures that captivate me wherever I am at in the world. And to connect back to Lake County, specifically the Red Hills, elements of its geological history are solidified in the obsidian that blankets its slopes. Much like a photograph, obsidian is a picture into the past.

THE ARTIST

Nathan DeHart is a fine art and commercial photographer originating from Lake County, CA. After his father gifted him a disposable camera at 8 years old, he fell in love with photography. He began to hone his craft at an early age. The road trips he undertook with his father provided photo journaling opportunities that fomented his interests and cultivated his artistic perspective and worldview. In making photographs, Nathan seeks an open and exploratory experience— finding connection with his subjects be it human, animal or nature. He has collaborated with partners across a wide range of industries and backgrounds. He engages in a variety of photographic endeavors to the point where he is truly comfortable with people and draws from those connections to further his work. Nathan brings a detailed, considered perspective to his work, whether for clients or to help social justice issues. On his extensive travels, he has perfected the skill to frame what he confronts by exploring the subject in-depth and seizing images that are artistic, genuine, and at the same time refined and cultivated. In the end, he has built lasting bonds with his clientele from corporate to nonprofit during his career, including Banana Republic, Restoration Hardware, The Imagine Bus Project, and Worldwide Healing Hands
